Jersey Boys

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, this was SO GOOD!!!

I got to go see Jersey Boys down at the Buell last night, and it was incredible.  It's the true story behind the rise and fall of the Four Seasons...and wow.  WOOOOOOOOOOW.
"Things you would never guess from the music" would probably also be a fitting title for the musical (though slightly harder to fit on the T-shirts).
It was beautiful.

Auditions

No one is ever going to read this.  Which is really depressing, if you think about it.
Still, for whatever reason, I felt semi-obligated to post.
Remember those days when we used to check AJ's blog, and tell him to come back to it, like we wanted him?  Now it's sort of the opposite.  Which is also depressing.

I had my audition.  I sang in my head voice.  Ms. West said lots of things.  She recognized that I took a risk doing that.  She said I was growing.  I think she means musically and theatrically, but I would agree with her in terms of life in general as well.  I did fairly well.

In an odd sort of way, I think I wasn't really preparing my song so much for her.  I was preparing it for someone else... I built up their opinion so much.  And yet, when I was done, all they could say was "that's really high for you, isn't it?"

People will always disappoint you.  But that's just why God is so much better.

Rehearsal!

Yeah! We had Charlie Brown rehearsal yesterday!

It felt good to be back with everyone doing that show again. Seriously, I love that show soooo much. It was sorta interesting to think how much things have changed since we had rehearsal last. School hadn't started...oh, and just all sorts of stuff.
But it was good to be back.

Car Wash!

I'm updating! :)

Okay, so the 16th- it's the Saturday after school starts- at 287 and Baseline in the Walgreens parking lot, the cast of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown is having a car wash! The thing is, we need to raise enough money to take a small insurance policy. And while we're not sure, I'm guessing that's gonna cost a pretty penny. So come get all your vehicles washed! It's only $5 a car, but you also get showtunes while you wait and there's free cookies for kids. Adults have to buy them. So please, tell all your parents, relatives, friends, and just EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
I forget what times it is...Katie? AJ? Thomas?

The House of Yes

By Wendy Macleod
Presented by Square Product Theatre

Plot Summary: "Sweet young Marty brings his ingenuous donut-shop waitress girlfriend, Lesly, home to meet his family at their opulent Washington D.C. mansion. But the Turkey Day goings-on are considerably less than wholesome, as Lesly discovers the moment she meets Marty's decidedly dysfunctional family, including his asylum-reject twin sister, Jackie-O, whose hobbies include incest and reenacting the JFK assassination with prop blood and her brother as victim." ~Movies.com

Basically, this darkly disturbing (yet simultaneously comical and captivating) is about the epitome of family dysfunction. Jackie and Marty are twins - with a dark history that ties them to each other with more than just common blood.

My Review: The set is a simple black box stage at the Atlas Theatre, that immediately makes the viewer feel like more than just an observer - more like a part of the action. Really, this was the very first piece of theatre I've ever seen where i completely lost track of time and gave myself up to the gripping story that is The House of Yes. The acting was literally, the most flawless i've ever seen. The actors far surpassed those i've seen anywhere else - at the Buell, at school productions, even some oscar winning films. This is also the first production i've seen where the actors unflinchingly became the character they were trying to portray. Most of the time, you can see little hints of the real person beneath coming through (even on Broadway). Not this. I forgot i was in a theatre, the story became real, and the shock and horror portrayed became my own. I won't give anything away here, but if you want to find out more about the plot, come talk to me. This freaking blew me away. It's my favorite play now.

Uncontentedness...

Recently I've noticed that drama people are rarely content with one role at a time. No sooner have they aced one audition then are they pining away for another...That's probably not an asset.
Why do we always have to be busier than someone else? Like, haha, I'm more overloaded and stressed than you are!?
Or it that even it?...
I actually don't think that's the root of it. We just can't be satisfied!

Maybe it's that we're too idealistic. Always geeking out over what the perfect show to do would be, but once it's in full swing there's always a new one...Hmmm.
So what do you all think?

MY FAIR LADY!

Was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! The set! The costumes! The vibrato! The cokney accents! It was GLORIOUS. A thing of beauty, the definition of theatrical art. But most of the Buell's productions are like that.

Seussical

Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh it was totally AMAZING!!!  (can you tell from my first 12 words? haha) IT WAS SO GOOD.  The costumes and set, to start, were incredible- the set looked straight out of one of his books, and the costumes were ingenious and original.  The plot was entertaining, and it seriously hooked you.  This may also be a result of really good character development, but you really actually cared what happened to them.  The actors seemed really focused, and when they sang it was totally amazing.  It was just totally ridiculously good... even once the show was over and we got to meet the performers :)

IT WAS SO GOOD!!!  Ah!

The Somewhat True Tales of Robin Hood

So on Saturday night Mel (who you pretty much literally have to live in a whole to have not met- *cough cough AJ! cough*) dragged me to Skyline High to see their performance of The Somewhat True Tales of Robin Hood, which I think they wrote themselves.  It was advertised as a musical, but the only music featured in the show was "Men in Tights" blasted over the sound system while people where taking their seats.  The lights open on a set of trees- I think.  These so-called "trees" are really people wearing green hats with their faces sticking out of what literally is foam.  Gigantic pieces of foam cut in evergreen shapes.  Therefore, I start thinking it's a little sketch.  Haha.  However, I was pleasantly surprised with it!  It was really good!  The jokes were both witty and clever, and the actors were quite talented.  The set improved throughout the course of the show, and the changes were fairly seamless.  I saw it closing night, and it was well worth it!

Okay, Which Do You Like Better?

For our sophomore year, Ms. West I think is planning on doing the Music Man.  This is a classic, with lots of parts!  Lots of small, chorus-type parts...
But anyways, which musical do you personally prefer and/or think would be better to do-
Music Man or Crazy For You?

Personally, I think we should do Crazy for You.  It may not be as well-known and it's not exactly considered a classic, but I think it would be so much fun!  There are more parts that aren't just like "Indian Dancing Girl #8" or something, and the music is SO GOOD!!!

Play Review!

Last night, i went to go usher and see Coal Creek's latest show, The Rainmaker.

It was FABULOUS. Simply walking in gave you a warm feeling because the set was just so cozy, and comfortable and intimate. The audience was on three sides of the little stage, and there were only 60 seats (which were pretty comfortable). I really liked the lighting. There were dim lights on in the house the whole time, so you felt like you were almost a part of the show, and like i said, there was a warm feeling going on. The set was fantastic. Although there were 3 different settings in the script, the set designer managed to incorporate them all into one scene. In one corner was the sheriff department. In the center was the Curry house, and in the other corner was the tack room or barn. When the action wasn't in a certain area, the lights went down in that part.

I'm too tired to talk about the actual plot, but you get the jist of it. It's a cute story. And the woman who played Lizzie was really quite wonderful.

Over and Out.

The Little Mermaid- Broadway

So, back in August, the pre-Broadway engagement of The Little Mermaid was at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, and my friend Mel took me to see it.  It was so good!!!  Well about three days ago the soundtrack came out, complete with a ton of new songs, composed by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater.  Complete with all 29 songs from the show, it's SO good!  The new songs blend perfectly with the old ones from the movie, and it gives the characters more depth, more reality.  Some of my favorites are She's In Love (Flounder, the Mersisters), Her Voice (Prince Eric), and Beyond My Wildest Dreams (Ariel)!  So if you guys want any of the songs, I can totally burn them for you.

Urinetown and others

So, you should all definitely do urinetown with me you guys! The music for it is so awesome! BDTA is also going to be sick! it's a little expensive, but maybe you can wok out a deal with your parents like I did. I think they're doing Pirates of Penzance this year. I'm not crazy about the show, but I realized that the camp is so worth it! You learn so much and..hello, performing at BDT anyone?

I would just like to say...

That this blog is in dire need of an update.

Today in science, we made cell mitosis cookies. Oy Vey. It was quite an easy test, but if they want to give us an edible assessment, please at least make it something appetizing. Please.

I'm not looking forward to history tomorrow. I have a feeling we'll just be doing the same old, same old.

Rehearsals: Ehh...they went great yesterday. I love the morning song or chant or whatever. But, it's hard because only a quarter of us are ever there at a time, and a certain someone has made actually practicing rather difficult...not that i'm going to name names or anything, but one can use their imagination.

My dad is watching a tv program on the history of game shows. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Good grief.

I'm going to go read now. Comment folksies. Read, reply, keep the juices flowing.

Night, night.

God Bless

A Night With David Ives

The first one?  We pulled it off earlier tonight!!!
It went well.  I think ours did really good!
It was weird though.  Since ours goes first, once it was done, I was like, wait.  It's over?  And I guess now it almost is...
It feels like callbacks were just yesterday!  And all those days in the orchestra room as the light suddenly vanished, leaving us in darkness as we struggled to make out the dim writing on our already tarnished paper scripts?  Those are lost in the process...The process which seems to have never happened at all.
Has time even passed since we started this whole endeavor?  It doesn't seem like it...but it does.  We all have our inside jokes now, our secret rivalries, our silent memories.  How did it go for you guys?
Good
night
God
bless

Hmm...My, "Power" Color

I do like indigo...

Your Power Color Is Indigo

At Your Highest:

You are on a fast track to success - and others believe in you.

At Your Lowest:

You require a lot of attention and praise.

In Love:

You see people as how you want them to be, not as how they are.

How You're Attractive:

You're dramatic flair makes others see you as mysterious and romantic.

Your Eternal Question:

"Does This Work Into My Future Plans?"

And tech week begins

Tech week officially began today. Whoo-hoo!
Somehow I feel like we got less done than we did in normal rehearsals. Of course, we weren't too productive in those either :)
It was fun seeing the others.
Thomas and Kelsey, yours is hilarious!!! Poor Agnes
I hope ours worked well. It's incredible how close the audience is! I liked my banana stab
And AJ, don't hurt yourself too badly. Somehow I think we have most of our body parts for a reason...

For all of you reading this, if you aren't in them, I fully expect you to come see them. "A Night With David Ives" will be Wednesday and Thursday, January 16 and 17 2008, I'm guessing at 7 o'clock. I think the cost is...5 dollars? Maybe 3, if you're lucky. Anyways, come and take part in culture, as the treasured audience of "Words, Words, Words," "Sure Thing," "The Universal Language," and "English Made Simple."
BUT WAIT!
Parental Advisory:
MATURE CONTENT!!! (Ah, that's so cool.)
Beware of hauling the youngin's to this one, folks, because it features some mild (or not...quite...so...mild) profanity, as well as inappropriate references. Still, y'all should come.
